What’s Your Family’s Mission Statement?

As the economy continues to open back up, we want to refocus the narrative on the good habits we’ve all tried to create and continue during the last year. This isn't necessarily a new idea as, at least from my own experience, I have done really well for a month, then fall back into old habits such as making and eating cookies. The goal here is to continue the healthy habits and create a family mission statement. This Mission Statement post isn’t necessarily about bison, and more so just a pre-requisite to Thanksgiving.

Why Create A Family Mission Statement

A family mission statement is a description of the family’s reason for existing, and their shared purpose, goals, and standards. Companies have family mission statements, so why shouldn’t we? This mission statement should guide our family with better parenting decisions, encourage good behavior, and provide meaning.

Our Mission Statement

Did your parents ever have fun sayings around the house like, “It’s not how big the house is, it’s how happy the home is!”, or “No fussin’, no cussin’, no back talkin’”? Well, the JJ Bison family did. Our family mission statement revolved around these tiny decorations. It helped us get up early and help out with projects around the farm and office, it helped us continue to smile through weird instances in life, and it helped us come together during difficult times in our lives. Our mission statement revolves around family, a healthy attitude and lifestyle, and God with the goal to provide opportunities to make good day-to-day decisions and promote core values.

The JJ Bison family mission statement goes like this: Our mission is to love and support each other with a helpful and thoughtful attitude, and treat others how we would like to be treated. We strive to continuously learn and measure success through our actions and hard work. We cherish our home filled with love, laughter, and happiness that glorifies God.

How to Create A Family Mission Statement

  1. Call a family meeting: Scheduling a meeting is just to make sure everyone is on board and open to discussion. It doesn’t have to be overly fancy, you could make a family mission statement over pizza!

  2. Have the discussion: Talk about and capture key ideas that enhance your family values and what you want to stand for as a family. The goal is to gather some core family values, adjectives about how you and your children want to think of your family.

  3. Create your family mission statement: There’s not a set formula for creating a mission statement. It doesn’t have to be flashy, or a haiku or anything -- just have fun!

  4. Write it down or print it out: Write down your statement and now live by it! Put it up somewhere you can see it and refer to it as a parenting or family strategy.
